The Americans for the Arts 2005 Annual Convention was a great success! Throughout the meeting, over 800 cultural leaders explored ways to advance the arts as a powerful community development tool. Keynote speakers Malcolm Gladwell, best-selling author of Blink and The Tipping Point; Ed Bailey, vice president of brand development for Austin City Limits; Alejandro Escovedo, musician; and Peggy Conlon, president and chief executive officer of The Advertising Council, shared key strategies for leading the charge. Our Innovator Series participants—Moy Eng, Donald Byrd, Ben Cameron, and Louis Black—drove home powerful messages. Participants chose from a wide array of learning experiences, including strategy-building workshops, interactive arts-based civic engagement activities, and facilitated dialogues. Peer group meetings allowed for networking opportunities while learning about success stories, and evening events and ARTventures provided relaxation and a glimpse of the amazing city of Austin, TX. Artist in Residence Bart Weiss created a video that captured the essence of arts leadership and presented it to the group.

The convention was preceded by three meetings focusing on key sectors in the field:

Emerging Leadership: Vision. Action. Evolution.
This preconference was designed to help emerging leaders adapt to changes in the economy, the field, and life, while staying true to their personal and professional goals. Participants developed personal and professional plans of action, connected to a national network of dynamic emerging leaders, and created skills for moving their vision into reality. Keynote speakers Kenny Leon, co-founder and artistic director of True Colors Theatre Company; and Naomi Shihab Nye, poet, essayist, children’s author, and songwriter, provided inspiration and guidance.

The Lay of the Land: Public Art, Politics, and the Environment
Attendees of this conference explored two main focus areas: the connections between land art and public art, and public art within the social and political landscape. These topics were examined from a national perspective through key speakers, dialogues, panels, and case studies. Agnes Denes, an artist internationally renowned for her installations and Jose Torres Tama, multidisciplinary artist based in New Orleans, delivered keynote addresses. Tours to Austin’s public art and design hot spots provided a local lens through which the conference themes were viewed. Also featured were the Year In Review, a survey of the most innovative and exciting public art projects; and the presentation of the Public Art Network Award.

The New Marketplace: The Best of the Best of United Arts Funds Practices
During this meeting united arts fund leaders explored how understanding the implications of consumer trends can impact the design of fundraising strategies. Participants heard from key speakers Walter Elcock, president of Bank of America and Texas and Texas/New Mexico Consumer Executive; Bernard Boudreaux, senior manager, Community Relations, Target Corporation; and Eric Webber, vice president and marketing director, GSD&M. In addition, Felinda Mottino, Ph.D.—co-project director of the Donor Research Project, Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, The Graduate Center, The City University of New York—made a presentation on increasing giving from communities of color. United arts fund representatives from across the country presented case studies on innovative practices in their field.
