Topic: Cultural Tourism: Authenticity

The issue of authenticity is central to the promotion, development, and consumption of cultural tourism in America. Authenticity was identified as a chief concern in the 1995 White House position paper “Cultural Tourism in the United States,” due to the economic impact of such tourism and the potential for misrepresentation for financial gain. As cultural tourism gains in popularity, the demand for high-quality authentic experiences is on the rise. In an effort to maintain the integrity of cultural heritage and traditions, advocates of authenticity promote ethical practice and scholarship within the cultural tourism industry.
