New England emerging leaders in performing arts presenting The focus will be on gathering emerging leaders in the field of performing arts presenting to have a discussion specific to issues in New England. Many presenters in our region are small shops and may not have staff that fit directly into this category. We plan to engage staff in education, marketing, and box office departments that might pursue presenting as a career. There will be a meet and greet followed by a discussion on career paths in presenting led by Kristin Augusta from the Capitol Center for the Arts. Through discussion we may also examine professional development needed (and offered) for those entering and/or advancing in the field.
Speaker: Kristin Augusta, Director of Programming and Events, Capitol Center for the Arts
More ways to connect! At 1:30pm after the Creative Conversation, join us in the adjacent Recital Hall for a music workshop by Alpha Yaya Diallo, West African guitarist, who will perform at the Redfern Arts Center at 7:30pm. This performance is funded in part by the Expeditions program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program, the six New England state arts agencies, and the Argosy Foundation Contemporary Music Fund.

ELNYA's Paving Your Own Path in Arts Administration Unlike professions in business, law, or medicine, there is a less standard career path when you choose to become an arts administrator. Or is there? Come share what challenges you have faced along your own path so far in this peer-to-peer chat about arts administration challenges and successes. Telling tales from the road seemingly less traveled can inform others in the next lane over or a couple cars back. You may even pick up a pointer or two from someone else and their journey. |

What Are the Needs and Challenges in Providing Professional Development A continued discussion of some issues raised in the 2006 Creative Conversation. The focus will be on professional development—what are the needs and what are the hindrances to providing professional development opportunities. Both emerging leaders and the current leadership are invited to participate. Each group will have its own discussion and then the two groups will come together for a discussion. Questions to Consider: What skills need to be developed? What professional development opportunities do you wish were available? What are the challenges in providing professional development?

| Summary/Notes: |
When we think of the arts in the United States, we often think of nonprofit arts as the primary means of delivery. Nonprofit organizations depend, in large part, on donors, grants, and the generosity of volunteers. Many have suggested that this model is outdated and that we must find new models for supporting the arts. We will explore whether the model is truly outdated, consider some new models for giving, as well as future trends for the sustainability of the arts, in both for profit and nonprofit sectors.
We will be holding a Career Fair from 9 to noon on the same day. Organizations are encouraged to participate in this event as well (it's also a great way to meet prospective interns). Lunch is provided for those participating in both the Career Fair and Creative Conversations. |
