Public Leadership in the Arts Awards
Congressional Arts Leadership Honoree
|Recipient:||Senator James M. Jeffords (R-VT)|
Senator James M. Jeffords has served in the US Senate since 1989. The son of a music teacher, he developed an appreciation and love of the arts at an early age. He has dedicated much of his time and energy during his 23 years of service first in the House of Representatives and then the Senate to championing the arts and humanities and to highlighting the important role each plays in creating enriched opportunities for lifelong learning.
He is the co-founder of the Congressional Arts Caucus and of the Congressional High School Art Competition, a bi-partisan program that celebrates the talents of local high school students in Congressional districts across America. Senator Jeffords has worked to sustain federal funding for the arts and humanities in an effort to ensure that the arts are available to people in every corner of the nation, reaching urban and rural communities alike. A graduate of Yale and Harvard Law School, he served active duty with the US Navy from 1956 to 1959, and retired from the US Naval Reserve as a Captain in 1990. Senator Jeffords currently serves as Chairman of the Labor and Human Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
