PROJECT OVERVIEW
Ilya Kababov
Emelia Kabakov
Kiki Smith
John Roloff
Visually stunning and invigorating, ARTLANTIC’s wonder encourages locals and visitors alike to relax and gather in Atlantic City’s newest public spaces. Located along the historic boardwalk, the first location features two grass mounds interwoven into a giant earthwork creating a unique setting for installations by Robert Barry, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov and Kiki Smith.
John Roloff’s installation echo’s this landform on a sister site. With more than 34 million people visiting this city of less than 40,000, Atlantic City makes a unique setting. Through the curatorial direction of Lance Fung, public parks emerged through the lens of contemporary art amidst towering casinos, urban blight, and the ocean spray of the South Jersey shore.
ARTLANTIC exposes this city known for Monopoly, and Miss America to contemporary art for the first time. Furthermore, ARTLANTIC is the site of many firsts for the artists. This is Barry's largest public art installation in the United States and the first to ever be lit at night. The realization of a red garden surrounding
“Her”, a life-sized charcoal-colored bronze sculpture, was Smith’s dream since the 80’s. Created for ARTLANTIC, “Devil’s Rage” is the Kabakovs’ first U.S. commission and “Étude Atlantis” is Roloff’s largest interactive installation. Spearheading public art in Atlantic City requires participation by many. Partners and funders needed to be informed of its cultural, social, economic value and necessity for a thriving community.
During its creation, Fung Collaboratives has worked with the local unions and small businesses to construct the parks, collaborated with students from Stockton College to create a catalogue, and engaged the local high school in a poster contest leading to a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a first for many of its students. Through social media outreach, community mixers and programs, ARTLANTIC has reached thousands in less than a year.
