This project in an urban park utilizes Security Lighting funds to begin to creatively address some social issues. A ring of Live Oak trees lines the perimeter of the park walkway. LEDs and sensors mounted in the tree grates trigger unique interactive programming that bathes the trees in lush colors and magical effects. It increases security by raising lighting levels and stimulating more families to use the park at night. Two types of lighting occur when the energy efficient LED lights are triggered: Sensing Trees - The standard appearance: all trees are white. When someone passes a tree, sensors under each tree grate cause the LEDs to turn that individual tree green. It remains green for 10 seconds and then slowly fades back to white. Walking or cycling around the park can activate trees in sequence from white to green and back to white again. People moving along the path affect the space around them and leave their fleeting mark. Pulsating Color - By walking on any of the 5 hidden stainless steel medallions scattered around the park additional sensors are triggered that initiate dynamic colored lighting sequences that last from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Trees may suddenly change color, pulse, sparkle, glow, appear to be flickering or on fire, establishing spontaneous and intriguing connections between all 34 trees through the mediums of light and color. Symbols on the medallions represent ancient glyphs for Light and Power.
