PROJECT OVERVIEW

Description:

Wickiup refers to a primitive domed structure historically associated with Native Americans of the Southwest - temporary strong domed dwellings made of bent green branches, hides, and thatch. Simpson’s modern take on a Wickiup includes two sites, three metal domes, metal mesh, and geometric benches providing shade and a place to rest that honors the historical presence of indigenous peoples and their light footprint on the land. The pair is called Wickiup Encampment and the singular is Wickiup Overlook; both are visible from Pearsall Park and draw visitors to explore the distant amenities. Upon arrival at each installation site, visitors are rewarded with a place for respite and views over looking Lackland Air Force Base, meandering Leon Creek, pastoral and native landscapes, suburban villages and, in the distance, downtown San Antonio.

Pearsall Park is 505 acres and is designed to offer a dynamic open space with fitness and recreational amenities ideal for facilitating health/wellness/sports activities and outdoor family/social gatherings. Park expansion efforts doubled the total size of the park from 243 acres through City purchase of an additional 262 acres as part of the 2012-2017 City Bond Program. A few of the park featured improvements include a family fun zone (splash pads, basketball courts, and the City’s largest skate park and children’s playground), fitness challenge zone (forty-yard sprint time, zip line, and traveling rings), and public art installations (Wickiup Encampment and Wickiup Overlook).
