The LED illumination makes the train station look like the building is glowing from within or even that the neon light somehow spilled onto the building surface. The permanent installation is programmed for seasons, events, and holidays. The continually changing combination of color and rhythm offers constantly changing patterns from dusk to 2:00am every night. A key feature of our winning design was the decision to work with the building’s modern features, rather than obscure them. When the building opened in 1987 Paul Goldberger, the architecture critic, wrote in The New York Times that $40 million of public money had been squandered to create “a building (Stamford Train Station) that has a harshness almost unequaled in contemporary architecture.” Our project transformed this building into a canvas of light.
