Uplifted Ground
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The hundreds of earth-toned, grounded and suspended elements of this large-scale artwork were inspired by local geological formations, native minerals, and aerial photography. During the day, the delicate reflection of the embedded metals is accompanied by shifting geometric patterns of shadow; at night, light emerges from the elements creating a graceful dance of light along the walkway. The artwork is also an integral part of the structural design for the walkway, assisting with the conversion of an existing parking deck into the equivalent of a pedestrian bridge. In an effort to create visual continuity, some of the sculptural elements are installed in circular “wells” in the plaza of the Rental Car Facility. The vertical pieces of these elements reference both nearby geological cave formations as well as the drawing of water from wells connected to limestone aquifers in the region.
