Description:

Vocal Witness is a three part exterior sculptural installation by Jim Sanborn created for the new Veteran’s Adult Care Facility for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in Rocky Hill, Connecticut. The artwork consists of copper screens, which display texts relevant to the Veterans at the facility. One sculptural piece is a projection cylinder with a pinpoint light located inside the structure. During the evening hours text fills the courtyard space with the Congressional Medal of Honor citation for John Levitow. The text is projected over a wide area of the site and, in addition, the perforated screen represents the holes in the aircraft sustained when came under attack. The medallion screen includes logos of the armed forces, which represent the Veterans who live at this facility along with text drawn from the residents themselves. The long curved screen is comprised of text that draws from both significant events in military history and quotes by well-known military historians. The text is presented in the original spoken or written language, which retains their proper meaning and allows for a more abstract visual form.
