Voyage
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Voyage is a large-scale laminated glass mural that draws on the language of maps, plans, weather patterns and flight routes to depict an imaginary panoramic space in continuous flux. The drawn and painted abstractions make physical locations visible while giving the viewer the opportunity to shape their own psychological and emotional connections to constitute place. In preparation for the commission, Britton poured over San Francisco International Airport ephemera (maps, plans, weather patterns and flight routes). This was Britton's first public art commission and she worked closed with the artisans at Franz Mayer of Munich to achieve the dimensionality and movement that this epic work imparts. This was achieved by employing numerous techniques such as metallic etching, graphite sketching, and fired glazes on thirteen 9' glass panels.
