GENERAL

Research Abstract
Artnews International Directory of Corporate Art Collections, 1993-94

There are 1,294 collections described in the directory with 873 located in the U.S. and 421 outside the U.S. Of these collections, 825, or 62%, are ongoing and are still being added to, an indication that there is still a large amount of art collecting activity. The economic sectors where collecting has expanded include small firms, with a reduction in collecting by banks. Other trends are noted in the introduction.

Listings are arranged by company and indicate the type of business and governing authority. Information on the collection includes description, location, public viewing policy, status of collecting, the source of artworks and who buys for the collection, loan policy, selected past exhibitions and bibliography. There is also an indication of other kinds of art-related programs supported by the company such as contribution or sponsorship programs, underwriting for museums, community exhibitions, special events and awards.

There is an appendix of group exhibitions of corporate art collections and one of important corporate collections which have been dispersed or absorbed into other corporations. Included are indexes by:

  1. State and country.
  2. Corporate business.
  3. Media and type of collection.
  4. Personnel.

There is also a description of the Association of Corporate Art Curators and one for the National Association of Corporate Art Management. Published by International Art Alliance, and Artnews of New York, New York.
