Broadway As An Industry; The Determinants of Broadway Attendance 1975-76 Through 1987-88

Paper presented at the Fifth International Conference on Cultural Economics held at the Canada Council, Ottawa, Canada, September 27-30, 1988.

This paper investigates the determinants of attendance at Broadway shows in order to explain and predict aggregate attendance at Broadway shows. (p. 105) The authors make the following conclusions:

  1. income is a major determinant of theater attendance;
  2. ticket price has a negative effect on attendance; and
  3. the number of shows currently running and the number of shows that have been running during the season has a positive impact on any given week's attendance.
