Research Abstract
Corporate and Workplace Giving 1997: A Detailed Report About Corporate Contributions and Workplace Giving to United Arts Fund Campaigns During Fiscal Year 1996

About this Report:

During winter 1997, Americans for the Arts sent surveys to 70 UAFs to collect detailed data about their 1996 fundraising campaigns, revenues and expenditures and programming. This report is based on the 51 UAFs that provided information about their top ten corporate contributors and the 30 UAFs that provided information about their top ten workplace giving campaigns for 1996. This is the first time since 1989 that this report has been published.

This report begins with an executive summary and is followed by eight lists. The first four detail corporate contributions to UAF campaigns; the final four detail UAF workplace giving campaigns. Both sets of data list the:

  • UAFs alphabetically by city.
  • Size of campaign or contribution (in descending order).
  • Corporations that participate in multiple cities (listed alphabetically).
  • Contributing corporations (all listed alphabetically).

Finally, a caveat. It must be noted that these data include only the top ten corporate and workplace campaigns contributed to each responding UAF during 1996. If a particular corporation is not listed under a campaign, it does not mean that corporation did not provide corporate support or workplace giving to that UAF; it may simply mean that at least ten other companies gave larger contributions. In addition, several UAFs provided the names of their ten largest corporate and workplace contributors but chose not to list the dollars donated nor, in the case of workplace giving, the number of participating employees. In these cases, the contributing companies were included and n/a was listed in place of the figures.

Executive Summary:

  • A total of 59 UAFs responded to the 1997 United Arts Fund Council Survey. Of these responding UAFs, 51 listed their top ten 1996 corporate donors (86 percent) and 30 provided their top ten workplace giving campaigns (51%).

  • Corporate donations: The 51 responding UAFs reported that 405 companies made a total of 491 corporate donations during 1996. 46 of these companies made donations to UAFs in multiple cities (11%). The top ten corporate gifts totaled more than $1 million for five of the 51 responding UAFs (10%). 60 of the 491 corporate donations made to UAFs during 1996 totaled at least $100,000 (13%). Proctor & Gamble made the largest single corporate donation - $500,000 to the Cincinnati Institute of Fine Arts.

  • Of the 46 corporations that made multiple contributions, 29 contributed to two or more separate campaigns (63%); 17 contributed to three or more campaigns (37%), and eight contributed to five or more campaigns (17%).

  • Workplace Giving Contributions: The 30 responding UAFs reported that 207 companies conducted a total of 239 workplace giving campaigns during 1996. Twenty of these companies conducted workplace giving campaigns in multiple cities (10%).

  • Workplace campaigns ranged in size from $210 to $337,175.

  • Four different UAFs reported at least one workplace giving campaign of $100,000 or more during 1996.

  • In total, thirty-six workplace giving campaigns of at least $50,000 were conducted by UAFs during 1996 (15%), including 14 campaigns of more than $100,000. The Cincinnati Institute of Fine Arts also conducted the largest single workplace giving contribution - $337,175 from General Electric Aircraft Engines.

  • 12 of the 20 companies that participated in multiple workplace giving campaigns did so in two cities (60%). Eight companies participated in at least three campaigns (40%).
