Research Abstract
Giving USA: A Compilation of Facts and Trends on American Philanthropy for the Year 1982

This book covers all types of giving to all sectors. The following information is from the chapter on giving to arts, culture and humanities. Private giving to organizations, institutions and agencies in the arts and humanities increased last year to $4.96 billion, but the new record total was boosted by a single gift of $1.3 billion, and without that, giving to the cultural segment of the philanthropic community risen by just 6 percent. The American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel said that its estimate for total giving to the arts and the humanities showed an increase of 43.8 percent, but when the $1.3 billion which was left to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles by the late J. Paul Getty is discounted from the total, giving would have risen by only $210 million from its 1981 level of $3.45 billion. The year-to-year gain in actual contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations - those that traditionally constitute the bulk of giving to cultural activities - was 6 percent above 1981. The AAFRC said there was some evidence that both corporations and foundations were slowing the growth rates in contributions to arts and humanities. There was support for this contention from some studies, while others continued to show healthy growth rates. But virtually all of the surveys, on which the Association bases its estimates for total giving, pointed to much harder times ahead for cultural organizations. The switch in corporate and foundation funding appeared to be at some expense to cultural organizations while it benefited the educational institutions and those in the health and social services category.
