Having a Swine Time: Animals on Parade

GENERAL

Research Abstract
Having a Swine Time: Animals on Parade
Since summer 1998, herds of fiberglass, polyurethane, and polymer animal statues have been appearing on the sidewalks of cities in North America and Europe. The statues represent cows, lions, horses, pigs, moose, and Snoopy dogs. The trend began with a parade of cows dubbed Land in Sight in Zurich, Switzerland. Many communities have since joined the animal parade craze to the delight of most residents and tourists. Sponsored by cities and local businesses, these summer exhibitions are often criticized by the art world as too commercial. The origins of the animal parade comes from the world of carnivals and department store displays, however two new features have been added: 1) The current herds of animals are produced by a wide range of artists and 2) when the exhibition is over, auctions are held with proceeds going to local nonprofit groups.
