Research Abstract
Projects and Proposals: The New York City's Percent for Art Program

Catalog of the exhibition Projects and Proposals: the New York City's Percent for Art Program, at the City Gallery of the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), New York City, January 21, 1988-March 4, 1988. The exhibition documents the wide variety of art selected through DCA's Percent for Art Program from its inception in 1983 to the present. Through the program, in the next few years these fourteen projects will be in place not only at traditional sites such as schools, hospitals and parks but also at sanitation garages, piers and firehouses.

In many ways, New York City's Percent for Art Program is a unique urban model. Building on the City's long tradition in the public art arena, the Program expands New York's art collection and demonstrates the important role that artists can play in determining our experience of public places. The Percent for Art Program brings together artists, architects, City Managers, community boards and a wide array of City agencies. It is a wonderful example of the kind of municipal collaboration that is so vital to the success of public art projects. (Foreword).
