GENERAL
We have the honor to submit the survey of the New York State cultural institutions are required by Chapter 313, Laws of 1960, and our recommendations for encouraging participation in and appreciation of the arts. Our survey covers the financial status of the professional, non-profit and hence tax-example institutions that deal with the performing arts, the visual arts, and history. The survey also lists the theatres and auditoriums outside of New York City which by their size and present condition, can house performances of opera, ballet, drama, and symphonic music.
The survey further lists the smaller museums, community art centers, libraries and galleries throughout the state which are interested in showing circulating exhibitions, and contains a roster of those members of the larger museums and historical societies who are available for consultation on professional problems. We find that there is no cultural institution in New York State today, whether it be a museum, an historical society, an orchestra, an opera company, a ballet, a repertory theatre, that is self supporting; even though admissions may pay for a good share of expenses, all are dependent, and will continue by their nature to be dependent, on municipal, county, and private donations for their very existence.
