In 1982, 1985, and 1992 the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) funded nationwide surveys conducted by the U. S. Bureau of the Census on arts participation among adults in the . The purpose of these Surveys of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPAs) was to track American participation in the arts and document other aspects of arts participation. Summary reports and secondary analyses for all three surveys are available from the NEA. This monograph analyzes participation in opera and musical theatre/operetta in 1992 and compares it with participation 10 years earlier.

This monograph examines and interprets survey data pertaining to public participation in the arts via television, radio, and sound recordings. The data derive from 1982 and 1992 surveys of leisure activities and public participation in the arts conducted by the U. S. Bureau of the Census and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Since 1973 the American Council for the Arts has commissioned nationwide public opinion surveys on the arts. The first five Americans and the Arts surveys were conducted by the National Research Center of the Arts, an affiliate of Louis Harris and Associates, and were published between 1974 and 1987. The sixth survey was directed by Louis Harris and completed by LH Research in 1992.
