The author examines the development of cultural policy in the United States. Diversity in cultural policy is one of the touchstones of the United State's position.

The attached remarks are an expanded version of a talk delivered at the New York State Theater of the Lincoln Center of Performing Arts on July 5, 1967, before an audience of teachers and administrators.|It stresses the renaissance of the humanities and the performing arts in American Society and the role of the schools in attaining man's highest aspiration, a cultural democracy.
