Between July and September 1989 the Australia Council sponsored a supplementary survey to the International Visitor Survey (IVS) conducted by the Bureau of Tourism Research. The IVS contains two questions concerning arts participation. These questions establish the numbers of international visitors who visit art galleries/exhibitions/museums and the numbers who attend live theatre/music concerts. As part of an expenditure question, the IVS also establishes the average amount spent on entertainment.
