GENERAL
This study, The Status of Nonprofit Arts and Museum Institutions in the in 1976, was designed to profile the major aspects of the cultural industry, including facilities, finances, accessibility, attendance, programs, personnel, problems and plans. Survey data were drawn from information provided by a sample of 1,185 cultural organizations, including opera companies, symphony orchestras, and other music groups, theatre and dance companies and other performing arts presenters; neighborhood and community activities; ethnic and folk culture programs; arts service organizations and councils; art centers; art history, natural history and science museums; botanical gardens, planeteria, aquaria, and zoos; and other visual arts programs.
The results of this study represent the single most expensive set of data collected to date on the cultural industry in the . It is the first major nationwide study to focus upon performing and visual arts institutions and upon service organizations and arts councils, covering a budget range of from less than $50,000 to over $5 million, and the first to standardize data, where appropriate, among art fields.
