Research Abstract
The Derived Demand For Collectibles

Paper presented at the Fifth International Conference on Cultural Economics held at the Canada Council, Ottawa, Canada, September 27-30, 1988.

The authors examine the market for firearms as collectible items. The authors examine the marketing practices of Samuel Colt over 125 years ago in the production of Colt 1872 revolvers when compared to the 1875 Remington Single Action Army rife. The authors conclude that:

It is suggested that the variety of marketing strategies initiated by Colt, and continued by his successors in the Company, created a high level of demand that eventually translated into a high level of demand for the gun as a collectible. (p. 139)
