Theater: The Vital Relationship

Published by FEDAPT, the Foundation for the Extension and Development of the American Theatre.

Mark Lamos, artistic director, and William Stewart, managing director, of Hartford Stage Company, discuss theatre: the vital relationship.

Messrs. Lamos and Stewart are responding directly to a set of questions that were posed to them by Joseph Melillo. Mr. Lamos specifically was asked about his art, how he defined the title Artistic Director, what did he believe management to be, and what did he infer from the word marketing. Whereas Mr. Stewart was asked what he thought management was, the parameters of the job of a Managing Director, the essentials of a relationship with an artistic director, what he believed marketing to be, and what qualities would he search for in a marketing person for his performing arts institution. (p. 17)
