There are so many partners doing amazing work in towns, cities, and states across the country--and in reflecting on this work, we wanted to especially thank the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and its staff for serving as the national lynchpin for the whole US arts field.

Responding to Yesterday's Tragedy in Oklahoma

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Dear friends and colleagues,

As we continue to hear more news about the devastating tornado that passed through the town of Moore on the outskirts of Oklahoma City yesterday, we at Americans for the Arts send our thoughts and prayers to the artists, administrators, and all those affected.  When natural disasters strike, there is no way to fully comprehend or process the pain they inflict.

The Wagoner Arts Alliance asked the Wagoner High school students and Brighter Futures enrichment center to do a work of art that showed pride in our schools. We ask businesses on Mainstreet to display the art until Homecoming.

Ahha Tulsa is hosting a come-and-go open house for teachers, administrators, and their families on Monday, September 10th from 4:00-7:00pm to kick-off National Arts in Education Week. With a valid school ID, educators and their partners and children receive free admission for the evening to explore the ahha Hardesty Center: investigate contemporary art in The Gallery, participate in immersive art in The Experience, and create your own art in The Studio.

The Wagoner Arts Alliance worked with local students to create pieces of art to be displayed throughout town.  The high school art classes participated as well as students from Brighter Futures. Brighter Futures is a free day program for children. The Art Alliance provided the paper for the students to work on.The students had a lot of fun creating the cards. I was blown away by their talent and creativity. The students were excited to have their art work on display around town.

Every year Americans for the Arts and our great partner the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) present public leadership in the arts awards at the USCM breakfast in January. In addition to honoring Mayor of Orlando Buddy Dyer, Mayor of Santa Barbara Helene Schneider, and Governor of California Jerry Brown, Americans for the Arts and USCM presented artist Ledisi with the 2016 National Artist Advocacy Award.

The City of Oklahoma City officially declares Arts & Humanities Month at their weekly Council meeting. The Mayor will issue a proclamation to arts and humanities leaders.
Free and open to the public.
