WASHINGTON – February 5, 2015 – Americans for the Arts, the leading organization for advancing the arts and arts education in America, announced today that Tommy Sowers, Visiting Assistant Professor of the Practice and Assistant Director of The Hart Leadership Program at Duke University, has been elected to the Americans for the Arts Board of Directors for a three-year term.

The winter meeting of the United States Urban Arts Federation (USUAF) took place in New Orleans, LA on January 21-23, 2015 at the InterContinental New Orleans. The USUAF was updated on Americans for the Arts current programs and initiatives for 2015, and many conversations were had over the weekend around central themes of arts and diversity, creative equity, placemaking, and more.

In his State of the City address on Tuesday New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio introduced plans to create 1,500 affordable living spaces and 500 affordable workspaces for artists across the city, according to the New York Times.

Today, the Obama Administration released its FY 2016 budget request to Congress, which includes a proposed $2 million funding increase for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The request also includes substantial tax reform proposals, which could impact charitable giving.
