Honorees Receive 2016 Public Leadership in the Arts Awards at The United Conference of Mayors’ Winter Meeting

Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education, and The United States Conference of Mayors today presented the 2016 Public Leadership in the Arts Awards to three elected officials and one artist at The United States Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting. The honorees have supported and promoted arts and culture in their communities.
- Jerry Brown, governor of California, was awarded the National Award for State Arts Leadership.
- Buddy Dyer, mayor of Orlando, Florida, received the National Award for Local Arts Leadership for cities with a population of 100,000 or more.
- Helene Schneider, mayor of Santa Barbara, California, was awarded the National Award for Local Arts Leadership for cities with a population fewer than 100,000.
- Ledisi, nine-time Grammy nominated R&B and jazz recording artist and song-writer, received the Artist Advocacy Award.
“Governor Brown’s, Mayor Dyer’s, and Mayor Schneider’s leadership in the arts should be an inspiration to all those serving in public office,” said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “Their unparalleled commitment to supporting arts and arts education programs exemplifies how investment in the arts translates into community growth, economic prosperity, and student achievement. We are also proud to recognize Ledisi, whose dedicated advocacy for the arts is truly extraordinary.”
