Biography

Americans for the Arts presents the 2010 Emerging Leader Award to Marc Vogl, program officer at The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The award will be presented to Vogl on June 26 at the Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit in Baltimore. Given annually since 2006, the Emerging Leader Award honors exceptional young arts professionals who demonstrate exemplary leadership; innovative thinking; and a commitment to advancing the arts in their local, state, or national communities.

Marc Vogl is a program officer in the performing arts program at the Hewlett Foundation where he manages grants to Bay Area arts organizations and develops strategies to promote next generation leadership. Vogl is also co-chair of Northern California Grantmakers Arts Loan Fund, serves on Oakland’s Cultural Commission’s Funding Advisory Committee, and previously served on the San Francisco Arts Task Force. He co-founded the Bay Area sketch comedy group Killing My Lobster and the Hi/Lo Film Festival, and was executive director of Lobster Theater Project, a multi-disciplinary San Francisco nonprofit arts organization.

Members of the Americans for the Arts Emerging Leaders Network chose to honor Vogl because of his personal interest in the generational leadership shift in the arts and professional dedication to leadership development for the field. An example of his work includes initiating a partnership with the Irvine Foundation that provided professional development grants to emerging arts leaders throughout California, focusing on career advancement and fulfillment, organizational capacity, and personal happiness.

“Americans for the Arts is committed to supporting the advancement of new arts leadership,” said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “Marc’s extraordinary work in the area of grantmaking and his passion to support the arts leaders of tomorrow exemplifies what it means to be an Emerging Leader.”
