Funding for Museums, Archives and Special Collections

GENERAL

Research Abstract
Funding for Museums, Archives and Special Collections

[This book] is designed to facilitate the search for financial support for museums and museum activities and programs. A museum, as defined by the American Association of Museums, is considered to be any ....nonprofit institution essentially educational or aesthetic in purpose with professional staff, which owns or utilizes tangible objects, cares for them, and exhibits them to the public on some schedule. Thus, this directory includes funding for aquariums; archives; art, history, natural history, science and science/technology museums; botanical gardens, historic sites and museum villages; planetariums, special collections; and zoos. The programs listed support a wide variety of activities or needs including administration and operations, acquisitions and collections management, conservation, education, endowment and capital campaigns, exhibitions, historic preservation, internships, outreach programs and renovation.

The directory also includes sources of support for individuals who wish to work, study or conduct research in museums or special collections. Museum professionals, scholars, and advanced students who wish, for example, to travel to collections, conduct research on collections held in museums or archives, undertake advanced training in museology or collections conservation, compete for specialized curatorial positions, or prepare scholarly publications, including catalogues, will find fellowship or grant support for their activities in this directory. Available support cuts across many disciplines, from art history to zoology.

Listing over 500 sources of support for museums or individuals wishing to work or conduct research in museums, this directory is designed to provide sufficient detail to steer applicants in the right direction in their search for funding. The programs, arranged alphabetically by sponsor, include support offered by private and corporate foundations, corporate direct giving, government agencies, associations and organizations, and professional societies. Each funding program profile includes available information essential to securing support: address, telephone number, program purpose and activities, samples of previously funded projects, eligibility and limitations, fiscal information, application information, deadlines, and any useful additional information. Applicants should, however, confirm all profile contents prior to proposal development. This means that current funding priorities, the availability of funding, and deadlines should be confirmed with the sponsor. (Introduction, p. vii).
