Culture and Tourism Linkages: Integrated Analysis of the 1986 Culture, Multi-Culturalism and Tourism Pilot Projects and Related Studies

In this paper, the author discusses the results of an integrated analysis of culture-tourism pilot programs conducted in five Canadian cities in 1987. The overall purpose of the research was to consolidated knowledge about how culture and tourism interact and to suggest practical implications for future endeavors in this area. Conclusions included: Culture, in the general sense of the symbol system, is probably the prime tourism attractions. (p. 151) Other conclusions included: Multiculturalism is at least as important a factor as high culture in travel decisions.
(p. 152) Another conclusion to the article is the lack of awareness of Canadian cultural attractions and how to develop potential markets to increase awareness.
