GENERAL

Research Abstract
Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts National Directory, 1994

This is the ninth edition of the National VLA Directory, with updated descriptions of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts programs throughout the and Canada. At present there are 46 independent VLAs providing legal services. Some VLAs are established members of their arts and legal communities, boasting full-time staff members and a variety of programs and publications; others are new programs still in the intitial development stage.

In many parts of the country where pro bono services for artists and arts organizations are not yet available, attorneys and representatives of arts organizations have expressed interest in establishing VLAs. Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts welcomes the opportunity to help develop new VLA programs, and has recently published a manual on starting a program.

The Directory was developed several years ago in conjunction with the first National VLA Conference. The aim is two-fold:to encourage communications among VLA organizations and to provide the arts community with a resource listing the VLA network. Through the Directory, VLA administrators have easy, quick access to information about VLAs' guidelines and programs.

VLA programs vary greatly. This directory is designed to provide basic information on income eligibility requirements, administrative fees and services offered. The information provided is as complete as possible, however, it is not possible to list all extenuating circumstances. For example, several VLAs adjust income eligibility requirements for individuals to allow for dependents and business deductions, and many VLAs waive administrative fees in hardship cases. To obtain clarification, it is best to contact each organization directly. (p. i)
