On Board: Guiding Principles for Trustees of Not-for-Profit Organizations

GENERAL

Research Abstract
On Board: Guiding Principles for Trustees of Not-for-Profit Organizations

While arts organizations are frequently used as examples to make or suggest a point, On Board is written for the broad not for profit field, not just for arts organizations. Guiding principles described here have equal applicability to virtually all not for profit organizations irrespective of their particular field or discipline.

As a result of this wide-ranging work, I am more convinced than ever that there is no right way for not for profit institutions to organize their governance structures. Each institution is unique in terms of its mission or purpose and must find the best means of implementing that purpose through the use of human and financial resources. There are some common requirements under the laws regulating not for profit corporations, but there is an enormous amount of flexibility within the different state and provincial not for profit codes.
