Arts Participation by International Visitors to Australia

GENERAL

Research Abstract
Arts Participation by International Visitors to Australia

Between July and September 1989 the Australia Council sponsored a supplementary survey to the International Visitor Survey (IVS) conducted by the Bureau of Tourism Research. The IVS contains two questions concerning arts participation. These questions establish the numbers of international visitors who visit art galleries/exhibitions/museums and the numbers who attend live theatre/music concerts. As part of an expenditure question, the IVS also establishes the average amount spent on entertainment.

The purpose of the Australia Council's supplementary survey was to expand this basic data to discover some more about the patterns of attendance and the motivation for attendance, and to see whether visitors were experiencing any problems in arranging for or visiting cultural events and places. Because of time constraints, the supplementary survey was limited to these three topics. The questionnaire for the supplementary survey was developed by the Australia Council's Policy and Research staff and pilot tested by the Bureau of Tourism Research.(p. 1)
