GENERAL
Shreveport, Louisianas cultural plan from the early 1990s outlines that citys agenda to improve civic livability and pride, boost cultural tourism, and make the city more attractive to new businesses. To create the plan, the following assessments were conducted:
-
Arts Organizations: Marketing and Economic Impact
-
Individual Artists: Background, Training, Current Art Participation, and Needs
-
Civic Organizations: Arts Participation and Arts Support
-
Citizens Attitude Assessment: Satisfaction with City Services and Commitment to Increased City Services Including Arts Programming
-
Cultural Attendance Survey: Arts Attendance, Interest, and Support by the General Public
Implementation was to have begun in the summer of 1992, with seven years allotted to finalize an arts district with a multi-purpose art center, contemporary arts exhibition space, and black-box theater space. To that end, 25 arts programs and projects were assembled to meet the six overarching goals, which are:
-
Create a Positive Image for Shreveport
-
revitalize Downtown and the Riverfront
-
Reduce and Prevent Gang-and Drug-Related Crime
-
Clean Up the City and Protect the Environment
-
Celebrate our Diversities and Similarities
-
Improve Education
Critical to the success of the plan is the necessity of integrating the arts into services provided by the City of Shreveport, hence the title, The City and the Arts: Making Connections.
