Description:

This sculpture commissioned and completed in 2014, is positioned specifically for The Lot LIC, a small parking lot-turned-public park on Crescent Street in Long Island City, NY. Created from a combination of cast concrete, ceramic tile, aluminum, fiberglass, grass seed and latex paint, this Backyard Pool offers a moment of intimacy and serenity within the bustling urbanity of Long Island City, Queens. Despite the pleasant recollections this kidney-shaped pool may evoke, it is a tragic flagship of non-functionality and dislocation, attempting to recreate comfort and familiarity in a rapidly changing and shifting environment. As a universal visualization of fading memories and forgotten landscapes, Backyard Pool belongs to no particular backyard; instead its undulating materiality and connection with viewers creates a new experience of place.
