Artist Andres Serrano explains the title of his temporary public art installation featuring a series of large-scale photographic portraits by saying, "I didn't want to call them homeless because it’s such a cliche and so I chose instead to name “Residents of New York” because they are residents and they live in New York city."

The work was recognized by Americans for the Arts Public Art Network (PAN) Year in Review which annually recognizes outstanding public art projects that represent the most compelling work for the year from across the country.
