PROJECT OVERVIEW
“SF Bay Guardians” is a series of six unique temporary murals installed on the sidewalk next to storm drain grates around San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood. Each mural depicts a different animal common to the San Francisco Bay standing guard in front of the storm drain and keeping various bits of trash and other pollutants from entering the bay. These cute animals gaze pleadingly to passersby urging them not to litter. The artwork draws an immediate connection between pollution at the storm drain and the lives of these friendly marine animals. Rather than commissioning painted murals, this project brought an innovative approach to creating temporary murals by using an environmentally friendly adhesive floor graphic product on which the mural imagery was digitally printed. The murals were on display as a one-year campaign to communicate an anti-pollution message in an unexpected and playful way.
