Announcing the 2017 BCA Leadership and BCA pARTnership Award Honorees
Americans for the Arts is pleased to announce the 2017 BCA Leadership Award and unveil the recipients of the new BCA pARTnership Award!

Casual wear designer, manufacturer, and retailer UNIQLO and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the foremost museum of modern art in the world, will receive the inaugural 2017 BCA pARTnership Award. UNIQLO and MoMA share a passion for quality, innovation, and spreading the joy of art around the world, and it is through these shared values that a dynamic partnership of Free Friday Nights and SPRZ NY was born.
Raymond J. McGuire, Global Head of Corporate & Investment Banking of Citi, will receive the 2017 BCA Leadership Award. A contemporary art collector, active arts leader, and philanthropist, McGuire has stated that his primary reason for supporting education and the arts is because it opens the door to future career opportunities for youth.

The honorees will receive their awards at the BCA 10: Best Businesses Partnering with the Arts in America gala on October 11, 2017, a black-tie affair at the Loeb Boathouse in New York City’s Central Park. Congratulations to them and to our 10 business honorees!

Businesses Are Looking Toward the Arts for Employee Engagement and Creativity, According to New Survey by The Conference Board and Americans for the Arts

Americans for the Arts partnered with The Conference Board to conduct the survey which examines trends in business support and employee engagement for the arts. The survey draws on 125 responses from companies of all sizes that participate in corporate philanthropy, employee engagement, volunteer programs, or sponsorships. In addition to the quantitative survey, Americans for the Arts worked with Shugoll Research to conduct a qualitative study to understand businesses’ attitudes about arts philanthropy among 15 current arts supporters. Driving Workforce Engagement Through the Arts
The Arts & Business Council of New York’s spring panel and networking reception brought together cross-sector experts from HBO, Steelcase, Culture Amp, Opening Act and limeSHIFT to discuss how the arts and intentionally-designed spaces can build competitive advantage and address core retention, engagement, and creativity challenges in the workplace. The panel discussion explored the ways in which the arts community rises to meet the needs of businesses, while strengthening the arts ecosystem. 
 
United Arts Fund in Oklahoma, Allied Arts, Celebrates its Brackets for Good Championship
Earlier this year, AT&T launched a national fundraising competition, Brackets for Good, and Allied Arts won the Championship! The United Arts Fund secured a $100,000 prize to benefit the organization's programming. Allied Arts was the only Oklahoma nonprofit selected to compete in the competition. The organization hosted a street party in its downtown community to publicly thank Oklahoma City patrons who donated to the nonprofit during the national competition.
 
 
Facts and Figures
Giving USA’s Annual Report: Total Charitable Donations Rise to New High of $390.05 Billion
Giving USA just released its 2016 report. It examines giving from corporations, foundations, and individuals. Some highlights from the full article about philanthropy and private sector giving to the arts include:
  • Giving to the arts by individuals, foundations, and corporations grew 6.4% to $18.21 billion in 2016. This is the 5th consecutive year of growth.
  • The percentage of all charitable giving going to the arts in 2016 grew to 4.88%, an increase from 4.51 percent in 2015.  The 2016 share of philanthropy is the highest it has been in at least 20 years.
  • Private contributions to all charities were up 2.7% reaching $390.05 billion, with 72% coming from individuals.  
  • Thus, the arts outperformed total philanthropy in 2016 (6.4% growth for the arts vs. just 2.7% growth in all giving).
 
Great Minds Don’t Think Alike: Artists as Innovators in Business, Government, and Society
Upstart Co-Lab has partnered with Emergence Creative, a global creative agency dedicated to social impact, on a media campaign to shift perspectives of leaders in business, government, and the social sector about how artists can contribute on teams, in partnerships, and to investment portfolios. The report defines Artist Innovators as artists who work outside the studio, the theater, and the concert hall bringing their distinctive talents and skills into business, government, and the social sector. The report includes insights from individual interviews with prominent Artist Innovators such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma and leaders from McKinsey & Company, Red Bull, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Americans for the Arts Unveils Findings from Fifth National Economic Impact Study of Nonprofit Arts and Cultural Organizations and Their Audiences
Arts & Economic Prosperity® 5 (AEP5) is the largest study of its kind ever conducted and was released in June at Americans for the Arts’ Annual Convention in San Francisco. AEP5 documents the economic contributions of the nonprofit arts industry nationally as well as in 341 study regions, representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The study demonstrates that nonprofit arts are an economic, employment powerhouse generating $166.3 billion in economic activity in 2015—$63.8 billion in spending by arts and cultural organizations and an additional $102.5 billion in event-related spending by their audiences. This activity supported 4.6 million jobs and generated $27.5 billion in government revenue.
