FACTS & FIGURES

2009 Corporate Giving
According to a study by LBG Research Institute, the majority of companies surveyed anticipate no change or an increase in corporate contributions in 2009.  Of those with corporate foundations, 50% say their foundation budgets will remain flat.  However, 49% of companies that support arts and culture expect their giving to decrease in this area.  More than 80% said their giving will be more strategic.  For information, www.lbgresearch.org.

Companies Cut Matching Gifts Program
More than a dozen companies have cut or reduced their employee matching gift programs.  Chrysler LLC reduced its matching from a 2-to-1 match to a 1-to-1 match.  General Motors suspended its program.  It is estimated that 10% of business giving in 2007 resulted from matching-gift programs.  For information, www.wsj.com.

GM Cuts Arts Funding
The General Motors Foundation notified cultural institutions in Detroit that it is sharply cutting its multimillion dollar arts sponsorship budget for 2009.  Detroit organizations will also need to adjust to the philanthropic budget cuts at Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC 2009. For information, www.freep.com and www.mlive.com.

Chase Announces Plans for SAM

JPMorgan Chase, which took over Washington Mutual in September, announced that it will not continue to rent Washington Mutual's 8 floors of office space at the Seattle Art Museum.  The museum had been using this income as debt payment for its 2007 expansion.  Chase is giving the museum $2 million a year for five years, but the museum will still be in need of an additional $3.8 million a year.  For information, www.stranger.com.

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE

"H&R Block's involvement in the arts stems from our commitment to fostering creative excellence and innovation in the lives of our associates and our community. H&R Block is especially proud of the unique and dynamic business/nonprofit partnership we have with Kansas City Repertory Theatre. Together we are using our theater in a way that benefits H&R Block and the KC Rep Theatre in ways we couldn't do at the same cost while contributing to downtown revitalization, day-to-day commerce, and the cultural landscape of Kansas City."
