The Sweet Side of Arts and Business

Jacques Torres, infamous New York City chocolatier affectionately known as “Mr. Chocolate,” has developed an innovative and successful partnership with ProjectArt, an organization that provides youth access to arts education. The chocolate company donates $5 from each sale of their delectable chocolate malt balls to ProjectArt, the support from which enables art instruction and arts access to a population largely from low-income areas. The partnership has proven a great success, driving Jacques Torres’ chocolate sales and ultimately sustaining ProjectArt’s many youth programs and initiatives. The “New Normal” in the Nonprofit Arts Sector
Blogger Eileen Cunniffe discusses how CECP’s Giving in Numbers: 2013 Edition found that arts and culture was America’s fastest-growing philanthropic cause in 2012. Yet many donors still don’t see the arts as essential to society, which is why their gifts went elsewhere during the peak years of the recession. She cites a list of funders that are counteracting this thought by making a positive impact to society through the arts, including 2013 BCA 10 honoree PNC Financial Services Group with its Arts Alive! program, as well as a list of arts institutions that successfully reinvented themselves post-fiscal crisis. Pro Sports Partnerships Could Be Your Next Power Play
The Seattle Seahawks may have won Sunday’s game, but both Super Bowl teams, along with the NFL, are making a winning impact through the arts in their own respective communities. Our full postgame report is available at the
pARTnership Movement, as well as other outstanding pro sports and arts partnerships featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys. (Photo courtesy of CenturyLink Field.)

Facts and Figures

Giving in Numbers Shows Opportunities in Corporate Arts Support through Education
The following charts detailing corporate giving by program area and program area allocations, taken from CECP in association with The Conference Board’s Giving in Numbers: 2013 Edition, shows that corporate arts contributions to  culture and arts consisted mainly of direct cash (54 percent) and foundation cash gifts (42 percent), although the average percentage of program allocations to culture and arts from companies surveyed was merely 5 percent. Corporate philanthropy appears heavily focused on the importance of the transition from education to the workforce, and the desire to boost the talent pool available to employers in the future. This data opens discussion on how arts education and arts in education can positively impact creative skills sought by employers and workforce readiness. View the full chart and download the latest Giving in Numbers report at Conference-Board.org.

As an additional resource, download Ready to Innovate, a research report produced by the Conference Board in partnership with Americans for the Arts and the American Association School Administrators, which poses the question: Are educators and executives aligned on the creative readiness of the U.S. workforce?

Announcing the 2013 VANS Custom Culture Grant Program Recipients!
As a component of its ongoing partnership with Vans, Americans for the Arts is pleased to announce the winners of the Vans Custom Culture Grant Program’s second year of funding. This competitive public high school (grades 9-12) grant program gives $2,000 to schools for their visual and performing arts programs. For example, Golightly Career and Technical High School in Detroit requested funds for a visual art project in response to negative imagery attached to the city. The project, entitled “Project D,” will be part bound book and part student exhibit of photographs capturing Detroit landmarks that students feel make the city great. The Vans Custom Culture Grant Program is supported by funds from the sales of the winning shoe design in the Custom Culture Art Competition.

Google Kicks Off Its Doodle 4 Google Competition
Americans for the Arts partner Google has just announced the launch of Doodle 4 Google, a design contest that encourages aspiring young artists to get creative and let their imagination and curiosity roam free. Students K-12 from across the United States are invited to submit their original doodle based on this year’s unique theme: "If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place…” Entries are accepted from now until March 20. Please share with the young artists in your life!

The national winner will:

  • have his or her doodle displayed on the Google homepage for 24 hours,
  • receive a $30K scholarship and $50K Google for Education grant for a tech lab in their school, along with other goodies,
  • and, for the first time ever, the winner will travel to Google’s headquarters in California to spend a day with the Doodle team to bring their doodle to life through animation.

Teachers can also bring Doodle 4 Google into their classroom in a number of ways, including:

  • utilizing three, free lesson plans with videos from Google’s own Doodlers
  • and integrating technology by joining in a “Connected Classroom” — a Google Hangout on Air — where a Google Doodler will take the class through the creative process for one of their personal favorite doodles, from idea to final creation.

More information, including all contest rules, can be found on the Doodle 4 Google site.

Speaking from Experience

“While government and corporate support for the arts has mostly declined, the PNC Foundation saw this as an opportunity to create PNC Arts Alive!—a multiyear, multimillion dollar initiative to make the visual and performing arts more accessible in the Columbus, St. Louis, Greater Philadelphia and southern New Jersey regions. The PNC Foundation has always believed that engagement in the arts enriches lives and builds stronger, more vibrant communities.”

-Eva T. Blum,
Executive Vice President and Director of Community Affairs,
PNC Financial Services Group, Inc.
