Description:

S-X-L (Spatial Experiments Lab) Inspired by the scissor-tailed flycatcher, the Oklahoma state bird, the Oklahoma City SkyDance Bridge Sculpture has taken shape near downtown. Physically spanning over with a striking complex stainless steel panel system invented by the design team as an abstraction of "feathers". The overall sculpture measures nearly 200 feet tall x 180 feet long x 60 feet wide. The ultra energy efficient internal lighting of the sculpture is performed by over 40 multi-colored and fully programmable LED lighting fixtures with an estimated energy cost of less than $2,000 per year. S-X-L developed innovative structural, architectural and lighting solutions necessary to implement the stunning sculpture. Cutting-edge algorithmic three-dimensional modeling techniques facilitated unprecedented local collaborations between architects, engineers, steel fabricators, and owners. Unique structural load challenges, budgetary constraints and lofty community expectations were met under intense time pressures to assure the Oklahoma City SkyDance Bridge would ascend prior to the opening of the new Interstate 40. The sculpture was officially completed just before Christmas 2011. The sculpture is one component of a larger Civic effort consisting of a 380-foot long pedestrian bridge to be completed April 2012, and a large downtown park, which is expected to begin construction in 2013. Total costs for the sculpture was $3.5 million; funded by ODOT federal funds and by City General Obligation Bond Authorizations. The design was selected ahead of three other internationally and nationally recognized design firms to define the icon and symbol for Oklahoma City. S-X-L is the design consortium, which orchestrated the winning design for what is now known as a great point of pride for Oklahoma as a bold demonstration of innovation and a welcoming hand to passersby. Working with lead artist Stan Carroll were Hans E. Butzer, Ken Fitzsimmons, Jeremy P. Gardner, Brett Johnson, Laurent Massenat, Chris Ramseyer and David Wanzer.
