Grand State of Maine is a life sized bronze moose adorned with official Maine state emblems in celebration of both local pride of accomplishment and pride of place. The artist’s vision was to incorporate not only formal Maine-based images, but also items that Maine residents are proud to call uniquely their own. The whimsical sculpture is located at the Van Buren border station, where people enter or exit the United States, and is positioned to greet residents and visitors from the local highway. The sculpture include state emblems that are instantly recognizable to Maine residents including: the moose itself, the black capped chickadee, the Maine coon cat, leaping salmon, moxie, whoopee pies, blueberry pie, wintergreen, and pinecone, among others. Mounted on an 8” high bronze base, which also contains official Maine state emblems, the bronze moose and base are further mounted on an 18” high granite plinth. Van Buren is a town on the Saint John River, a rural farming area in Northeast Maine located across from Saint-Leonard, New Brunswick, Canada. The population is approximately 2,171 and the town is named after U.S. President Martin Van Buren.
