Description:

Air Garden creates a moment of serenity for travelers amidst a hectic airport environment. More an atmosphere than solid object, the artists determined the color composition by tracing the trajectory of light through the atrium during the summer solstice and vernal equinox. The light shaft patterns were then mapped as colors in the artwork. As one moves through the terminal the strokes of color transform. The artists describe it as "sometimes suggesting an iridescent fog pouring from the sky and other times a translucent three-dimensional painting." Weighing nearly 6000 pounds, the sculpture is comprised of 7092 stainless-steel chains hanging in catenary curve formations. Through four years of research and development, the work is the pinnacle of Ball-Nogues' exploration of "extreme intricacy" and computation. Over 175,000 unique chain segments, totaling over 85 miles, hang in precise proximity to one another to share in the overall composition.
