Description:

In 2016, Pittsburgh celebrated its bicentennial, which included a national call-for-artists to create an installation piece for the Rachel Carson Bridge, one of three iconic, yellow suspension bridges that stretch across the Allegheny River. Artist Andrea Polli partnered with Pittsburgh-based Windstax to create 16 vertical axis wind turbines with micro-grids responsible for storing the work’s potential wind energy, and managing Energy Flow’s power system. The power generated by the wind light the 27,000 multi-colored LED lights that roughly outline the bridge's two main supports and numerous cables. If at any time there is not enough wind to generate power, Energy Flow is backed by electricity. The installation includes a weather station and nanogrid that continuously collects environmental data. On a bridge synonymous with Pittsburgh, Energy Flow highlights the region’s industrial past and celebrates the city’s ability to adapt and become a leader in technology and innovation.
