Solar Drones

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Title: Solar Drones

Lead Artist(s):

Description:

The Solar Drones are part of the new National Music Centre at Studio Bell, placed in the sky bridge linking the two buildings. This piece translates the varying sky conditions of Calgary into a tonal experience. Each resonating vessel was constructed of salvaged sound boards from the NMC’s piano collection that were destroyed in the 2013 flood. An electromagnetic system powered by solar panels, causes a music wire on each unit to vibrate at tuned frequencies, creating a variable sonic experience that compliments the visitors environmental impressions.
