The research described in this Monograph is drawn from an in-depth study of the growth and decline of nonprofit organizations in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area of Minnesota. The research project began in 1980 with a survey of 229 nonprofits there.

This is a culminating report, after two years of cultural planning, on the state of the arts in Broward County, Florida, the 16th largest county in the U.S. The county has pioneered a number of developmental approaches to arts and culture.

This article studies the implications of building expansive venues to attract visitors to a city. The thesis is that building the city for visitors may strain the bonds of trust between local leaders and citizens.

This Monograph explores an alternative view of stabilization, one that comes from a community perspective and focuses on the delivery of cultural services to a community rather than on individual cultural institutions. In the process, some emerging trends surrounding cultural participation, regionalism, and a new form of philanthropy will be identified.

The subject of this paper-how research can inform nonprofit-commerical intersections in the arts fields and cultural industries-is expansive, segmented, and scarcely explored. A full attempt to address the subject is beyond the scope of this paper. Therefore, this should be consider only an introduction to the subject. What follows are some comments on the research process as it related to our current state of knowledge about cooperation between the nonprofit and commercial arts.

During the fall of 1998, Americans for the Arts surveyed the local arts agencies in the 50 largest U.S. cities. Detailed data about revenues and expenditures, budget history, and arts programming were collected. This report is based on survey responses and telephone interviews from the local arts agencies in all 50 cities (100 percent compliance).

In this publication, the Sarasota County Arts Council outlines its Cultural Vision Plan to build and strengthen the arts as one of Sarasota County's key industries and civic resources; to actively engage all Sarasota County residents in the arts through education, participation, and life-long involvement; and to be a pre-eminent arts destination.
