In general, this manual is meant as a first step to identifying the root difficulties in small cultural organizations, especially for those that do not have access to professional consultants.

During 1987-1988, The Wolf Organization... completed a planning study for the Association of College, University and Community Arts Administrators (ACUCAA). The study included a comprehensive organizational assessment of all programs, services, staffing, finances and governance; ion-depth interview with 185 individuals; various retreats and meetings; and a review of ACUCAA's computer system. [ACUCAA is now known as APAP, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters].

This survey report examines the backgrounds and careers of senior administrators of resident theatres, art museums, symphony orchestras, and community arts agencies; the reward they receive from their work and their expectations about future employment; the training they have had and their evaluation of it; and their professional participation and attitudes on a range of management and policy issues.

This workbook is designed to accompany the manual The Road Map to Success: A Unique Development Guide for Small Arts Groups which itself is intended to help managers and board members of small cultural organizations assess their organization and its development. This book outlines various exercises for staff and board to complete an assessment of the organization.
