Americans for the Arts announced today that Julie C. Muraco has been elected as Chair to its Board of Directors for a two-year term. Muraco replaces Abel López, associate producing director of GALA Hispanic Theatre, who served as Chair since 2013. Muraco becomes the first woman Chair of Americans for the Arts since the organization’s formation as a result of a merger in 1996.

Former Congressman Ralph Regula, who represented the Canton, Ohio area for nearly 40 years, died July 19 at the age of 92. He was one of the most staunch and powerful Republican arts champions. On a national level, he protected the National Endowment for the Arts from conservative efforts to kill it.

The award honors an elected county board or individual leader who has significantly advanced the arts in the communities they serve.
