Americans for the Arts, in conjunction with the Congressional Arts Caucus and 86 national co-sponsors, celebrates Arts Advocacy Day 2010 today. More than 500 arts advocates from across the country are meeting with their representatives on Capitol Hill, calling on Congress to support arts-friendly legislation and policies. A highlight of the day is a congressional hearing entitled “Arts Build Communities” hosted by Rep. James P. Moran (D-VA), Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior. Advocacy has been at the core of Americans for the Arts’ history and is one of the many milestones being celebrated during the organization’s 50th anniversary year. Arts Advocacy Day 2010 brings together a broad cross section of America’s cultural and civic organizations, along with hundreds of grassroots arts activists.

The Creative Conversation will focus on how the business and arts sector can leverage their respective resources to achieve their most vital industry objectives.

Community, history, and race come to the forefront in this story about the development and unveiling of a monument celebrating civil rights activist and community leader Maggie L. Walker in Richmond, Virginia. The monument, in the works for almost 20 years with efforts lead by community and political leaders is a true testament to the power of the arts bringing communities together.

BMDC celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day (1918)  as part of the Arlington Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance on Sunday, November 11, 2019 at the Kenmore Middle School in Arlington, VA. BMDC will present Choreographer,  Eric Hampton's "Unravel" set to the sweeping movements of Maurice Ravel’s, Le Tombeau de Couperin. Ravel originally wrote Le Tombeau de Couperin as a memorial dedication to the many friends he lost during WWI. Bowen McCauley Dance Company restaged “Unravel” in 2018 to remember the late-Eric Hampton’s work.

Hundreds of children and their families are expected to visit the Torpedo Factory Art Center on Saturday, October 13, for Art Safari, an Alexandria family tradition for 23 years. Visitors can get their hand dirty with a bevy of interactive activities and crafts from noon to 4 pm.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center stays open late on the 2nd Friday of each month for The Late Shift. A new theme each month, the evening features gallery talks, artist receptions, music, live performances, hands-on artmaking, and three floors of open artists' studios. 

Never hide your talent! The National Arts Program Foundation in support and cooperation with the City of Richmond / Richmond Public Schools employees and immediate family give all artists, at all skill levels an opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional manner and to compete for cash prizes. The group exhibit is judged by professional artists and visual art professionals in Amateur, Intermediate, Professional and Youth/Teen classifications.

The Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP) is excited to partner with The Torpedo Factory Arts Center to host a Veterans Comedy Show on Friday, November 18th.

An interactive day of celebration and arts experiences for Veterans, Servicemembers, and their families.

An informative and life changing seminar focusing of restorative justice and the traumatic effects of incarceration on the community. Therapeutic art session: 'Peace by Pieces': community quilt project, dance movement and pottery. Enjoy 'Love Locked Down Theater project' 30-min play based on the block by author R. Satiafa (Danita Rountree Green). Panel discussion with Dr. Howard Zehr and other panelist, facilitated by Judy Clarke Director of Office of Restorative Justice.
