Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts, announced today that it is presenting the 2011 Alene Valkanas State Arts Advocacy Award to William P. Blair, legislative counsel for Ohio Citizens for the Arts. Presented by the State Arts Action Network (SAAN) of Americans for the Arts, the award honors an individual whose arts advocacy efforts have dramatically affected the political landscape at the state level. Mr. Blair will receive his award on June 16 at the Americans for the Arts Annual Convention in San Diego.

Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts, announced today that it is presenting the 2011 Arts Education Award to Arts for All, L.A. County’s nationally recognized collaboration to restore all arts disciplines into the core curriculum for all K-12 public school students. Presented annually by the Arts Education Council of Americans for the Arts since 2007, the award honors the best in arts education program design and execution and organizational leadership. Arts for All will receive its award on June 16 at the Americans for the Arts Annual Convention in San Diego.

Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts, announced today that it is presenting the 2011 Selina Roberts Ottum Award to Libby Maynard, co-founder and executive director The Ink People Center for the Arts in Eureka, CA. Given annually since 1991, the Selina Roberts Ottum Award recognizes outstanding contributions in the local arts agency field and is presented by Americans for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Ms. Maynard will receive her award on June 16 at the Americans for the Arts Annual Convention in San Diego.

Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts, announced today that it is presenting the 2011 Public Art Network (PAN) Award to Mary Beebe, founding director of the Stuart Collection at the University of California, San Diego. The Public Art Network Award honors innovative contributions to, and exemplary commitment and leadership in, public art. Ms. Beebe will receive her award on June 15 at the Americans for the Arts Public Art Preconference in San Diego.

Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts, today announced the recipients of six full scholarships to the 2011 Americans for the Arts Annual Convention in San Diego from June 16-18. These scholarships, which are awarded on a competitive basis and include travel and lodging, provide an opportunity for emerging leaders and those working in underserved communities to network with peers, gain professional development at workshops and bring new ideas and skills back to the communities they serve.

Yesterday, the House Education and Workforce Committee voted to approve HR 1891, the resolution sponsored by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) that terminates the authorization of 43 U.S. Department of Education programs, including the Arts in Education program.

Just 11 days ago, U.S. House Education Subcommittee Chairman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) introduced legislation (H.R. 1891) that seeks to terminate 43 federal education programs, including the Arts in Education program at the U.S. Department of Education.
The bill is now coming up for a vote in the House Education Committee tomorrow.
